Thoughts on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Part One

*Opening scene: It's a jolting beginning--the death of Frank Bryce. You instantly know that this book is not going to be like the others.

*Learaning the Unforgivable Curses: This is a really intense scene. It's kind of strange because this is where the magic gets really dark. They are no longer innocent to the dark powers of their world. It was sad to see Neville Longbottom have to learn about the Cruciatis curse. Is this where we learned about his parents?

*Neville: He's just so relateable....I love how he's kind of a loser, but in the end gets his moment. The fact that he loves Herbology...so great. A plant nerd. He's just a kind, sensitive soul. I really do like Neville. He's a good anti-hero.

*Other wizarding schools: I enjoy learning about other schools. It would be interesting to see what life is like at Beauxbatons or Durmstrang. I wonder if the name Durmstrang came from "Sturm und Drang" which literally translates as "storm and stress" in German.

*I hate to see Harry and Ron fight. However, I knew it was only a matter of time before the green monster reared its ugly head and came between them.

*Harry having to learn to dance is great. It's like every teen movie where the climax is always...the PROM! (and somehow everyone knows the same choreographed dance...)

*I love Hermione's transition. I think without the movies and Emma Watson, this might
be more dramatic. She's so pretty (even when they're trying to make her unattractive) that when I visualize her as Hermione in the book...it looses some of its luster. This is one case where it's good to have not seen the movies, because then her makeover is more exciting for her character and...Ron's.

*Snape is AWFUL to Hermione. Why is this? "I see no difference." What a jerk!

*Is Dumbledore hinting at the Room of Requirement when he describes finding a bathroom in the middle of the night (p 417 in my book)? I think he even winks at Harry, too.

*I wonder if Viktor mispronouncing Hermione's name is JK Rowling poking fun at all the people trying to figure out how to say her name. She once remarked that the weirdest pronunciation she ever heard was "Hermy-one"

*I just have to say that the Prefect's bathroom sounds amazing. I wish they would have that at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter....oh, and Moaning Myrtle's a perv. ;-)
